Day 269 - Cape Town, South Africa - 2nd May, 2005

We collected a rental car from Eurocar this morning. They must have the cheapest rates in the world. In GBP it's less than £15 per day. Since we spent £25 on taxis yesterday, it's a no brainer. I hadn't driven since Dallas (nearly 4 months ago) so I was a little apprehensive. Absolutely no need. They drive here as in the UK. They are even courteous, allowing you out at busy intersections and there is not a horn to be heard. Oh Delhi why can't you do it too.

The sun was shining and Table Mountain was devoid of it's often present tablecloth of mist. The chances were good that a trip to the top would be rewarded with excellent views. We drove the 20 minutes from the Backpackers hostel up to the cable car base.

It is a spectacular ride up. The cable car is almost vertical up the mountain which is about 3,000 feet at the top. Once you are there you can walk around the top for an hour or so. The views are the best we have seen anywhere on our trip so far.

We waited for them to turn on the Table Mountain spotlights but they didn't. I think they only do it on weekends.

The whole trip took us about 3 hours. It was a brilliant bright day with not a hint of cloud or mist that can so frequently obscure the view here. When we came down we drove to the other side of Table Bay so we could see the mountain from the other side of the bay and experience one of their amazing sunsets. The boys played on the beach. Julie collected a bucket full of shells (not sure what she is going to do with them - I'm not carrying them home!) and we luxuriated in the presence of day turning into night.
