Day 185 - Bishop to Mamoth Mountain - 6th February 2005

We woke up in Bishop and set about finding the local First Baptist Church. We found it as we now recognise the type of builing (hut) that they use. The service was at 10:00 and we were on time.

There were only 16 people in this church but the welcome was as warm as ever. The preacher had been to London in the last year or so and wouldn't let us go until we had his phone number in case we could come and see him later in the day or the week. This preacher started by saying that what he was going to do was more of a bible study than a sermon.

As you came out of the back of the church you could see the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas. They include mainland USA's highest peak (Mount Whitney) which stands at around 14,500 feet but many of the surrounding mountains are over 14,000. They looked as if they were just across the street but one of the congregation explained that the peaks were over 14 miles away. I didn't even know that the human eye could see that far.

We had some lunch parked up in Main Street. After lunch I took the boys into a real hunting, shooting and fishing shop where the owner showed them lots of interesting knives, guns and fishing equipment. Whilst we were there a lady came in and asked for 5 crickets for her tarantulla. The man opened his cricket chest and there were 100s of them jumping around. The boys were eyes on stalks.

We then drove up to the Laws Railroad Museum which was a privately owned railroad yard of 11 acres bought when the railways were closed. We spent at least 2 hours going around every building and getting personal tours of the refurbished coaches. We left Mum in the RV for a nap.

All said and done we set off for Mammoth mountain and arrived at around 7:00pm. The visitors centre directed us to the RV park which was just across the road. Mammoth has had 27 feet of snow so far this season and it was evident in the RV park that every site had been snow plowed out. We had driven from the bottom of the world to a place with 27 feet of snow (which lies compacted to about 6 feet) and which was now sub-zero and snowing again. Up and down we go. The idea was to get in another days skiing.

The one who got stuck!
