Day 201 - Bangkok, Thailand - 23rd February, 2005

(look alright, I'm writing this on March 9th. I'm way behind. We are actually in India. We have been here since 25th February but I just haven't caught up yet! Only a couple more blogs about Thailand, then it's India. We will be here for some weeks - so no panic)

We woke this morning not really believing our luck at the luxury of the hotel room. Sammy thought it was almost as good as the Queens Hotel in Portsmouth! However, he was so afraid of the height we were above street level that we weren't allowed to have the curtains open. We had an hours CNN and then made our way to the 79th floor via the 20th floor lobby for an above average breakfast.

This tower was constructed with all the utilities and lifts in a central section. The building was square in shape at this height (it was round at the top) with an outside dimension of about 80 feet by 80 feet. The central utility and lift are was about 25 foot square and sat in the middle of the bigger square. Around all the walls of this internal square were tables of the breakfast buffet. The stretched for 100 feet. There were Japanese sections (move along there), local Thai dishes, Halal foods, fruit and of course the trusty old bacon and eggs (hold it right there). It was a bit of a scrum really as there were at least 1,000 people needing breakfast every day and you seemingly had to walk around and around to find all the bits you wanted. The view was extraordinary.

After breakfast I set off to do battle with the lady at the airport to get my money back from the rum deal I had got there. I was not expecting it to be a pleasant task. Sammy opted to come with me for the 2 and half hour round trip so we set off to find a hospitable taxi driver. I found one and negotiated a round trip to the airport of 700 bhat. This is just about £9. We arrived at the airport and after first going to the wrong terminal I found the counter and the same lady who served me the previous day. I gave her the slips of paper that I had and after several minutes counting out money, she gave me 9,500 bhat in return. I had a full refund bar the taxi fare into town. A close shave Mr. Board.

We got back to the hotel and the boys went swimming in the 20th floor pool and we watched a DVD, which we rented from the hotel, of the new Italian Job on the computer. In the evening I took the boys and we rented a tut tut and collected a pizza from the local pizza hut (yes they are everywhere and no we did not go and venture into a Thai restaurant - especially not with 2 boys who still had memories of Japan). A good family day together doing nothing in particular but just being in the 65th floor of a luxury hotel.
