Sammy took control of this cycle rickshaw on our way back from the Taj Mahal. The driver was walking along with us as Julian and Sammy were pooped by now and needed to sit for a while (don't ask). After some time Sammy wanted to sit on the saddle. Then he started to pedal the thing. We eventually asked the driver if he wanted a ride back to the car park. We were prepared to take him, we said, for only 20 rupees. It's really the first time I have seen an Indian laugh from the stomach.

Funny, my experience of the humour is exactly the reverse. I recall coing back to India over the Nepal border about 10 years ago and being struck by how much more humourous the Indians in UP were than the generally dour and uptight nepalis. Coming back to Heathrow always reminds me how generally humourless and unfriendly the UK (or perhaps just London...) is compared to India, where in my experience people always have time to talk and laugh with you and each other.
