Day 174 - Las Vegas - 26th January 2005
We drove for 280 miles today, setting off very late from the Grand Canyon at around 12:30. We had arrived at around 8:00pm the night before and found an RV park right at the edge of the canyon. Unfortunately it was dark when we arrived and doubly unfortunately it was cloudy and raining this morning so we only got the very smallest glimpse of the canyon. It was a long way to come to see nothing but the drive here has certainly been the most spectacular of our lives.
The scenery is truly out of this world. There is no picture, movie or description that can convey the size and scale of the canyons, buttes and mountains that we have seen. Only the human eye can take it all in. We have been across deserts, seen meercats, eagles, ravens, elk, deer and cattle. We have been through Monument valley and many of the other parks in the "Canyon Lands" area. This is where all the famous cowboy movies where shot including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was also the location of other famous movies including the great ending to Thelma and Louise. Julie was expecting John Wayne to come around the corner at any moment.
We arrived in Las Vegas and checked out several of the larger hotels. During the week in the off season hotel rooms here can be had for £20 so that's what we did. We are staying in a hotel on the Strip called Circus Circus which is sort of OK for kids. It was almost the same amount of money as taking a spot in the RV park just next to the Strip. As soon as we had checked in we went and got something to eat and watched a small circus act being performed under the internal big top. The same drummer was playing the accompanying music as was there 3 years ago when I came for my mothers wedding.
I want to stay up all night telling you everything that has happened over the last week but I am really tired now. I have driven the RV over 600 miles in the last 2 days (at no more that 60 mph) and really can't type any more. I suspect that over the next few days I will have more time.
